Our Sustainability Journey

At Kotomi Swim, we care deeply for our planet and are taking steps to ensure that we create consciously and work towards greater sustainability. We are proud of the progress that we have made, but we are still learning and understand that there is so much more work to be done.

Compostable mailers

In 2018, we introduced the use of compostable mailers and use them for all orders that we are able to do so. You may have received your order in one of these little pink or black bags. They can be composted at home and will completely breakdown in 90-120 days. If they end up in landfill, they take a little longer to breakdown but will not leave harmful micro plastics in the environment (however, we fully encourage our customers to compost them at home where possible).

Compostable/recycled plastic product bags

When we first started Kotomi Swim, we were completely shocked to discover that it was common practice for businesses to individually package all of their products in plastic. We immediately removed this practice from our supply chain and introduced the use of compostable bags made from PLA (which is eco-friendly and derived from plants) that was free from plastic but would still protect our products.

We also pack in bags supplied by @betterpackagingco which is made with at least 70% Ocean Bound Plastic.

While this is a step in the right direction, we are still continuously working towards reducing our plastic use throughout all steps of our supply chain.

Hygiene stickers

We are working on phasing out the use of plastic hygiene stickers and aim for this to be completely plastic free in 2022. We will be moving towards protecting our products in compostable product bags and/or with the use of compostable hygiene stickers.

Fabrics:

Our team have been working hard behind the scenes to transition our pieces over to sustainable fabrics. After a tireless amount of research and testing, we are proud to share that from the end of 2020, at least 50% of each bikini made will be crafted from recycled fabrics that don’t compromise on quality or comfort. Moving forward, we will continue to incorporate the use of sustainable fabric with the aim for each bikini to be made completely from eco-friendly fabrications.

SmartCycle:

While we are doing our best to minimise waste and plastic-use throughout all areas of Kotomi Swim, where we are unable to completely remove the use of plastic, our team collect and recycle all soft-plastics through SmartCycle to ensure these do not end up in landfill.

We understand that we are not perfect, and our journey towards sustainability is one that will continuously evolve. Your support means the world to us, and we would love to hear your feedback and suggestions that will help us improve our practices.

Much love,
